August Wilson's "Two Trains Running"
August Wilson’s *Two Trains Running* comes to Morgan State University’s Murphy Fine Arts Center in a Theatre Morgan production directed by CJay Philip. Set in 1969 in Memphis Lee’s diner in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, the play follows the diner’s regulars as they confront racial injustice, poverty, the rise of the Black Power movement, and the threat of urban renewal. Memphis is fighting to receive a fair price for his restaurant, which is slated for demolition, while the community faces the social and psychological consequences of impending gentrification.
The play premiered on Broadway in 1992, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and is part of August Wilson’s American Century Cycle. This production is included in the Baltimore August Wilson Celebration, a three-year project featuring multiple August Wilson productions presented by different Baltimore theater companies.
