Jones Falls 2076 Stories of Rivers Reclaimed
Stories of Rivers Reclaimed is a 90-minute, in-person panel connected to the Jones Falls 2076 exhibition at The Peale. Panelists from Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New York City will examine examples of cities that removed or decommissioned highways and restored waterways that had been buried or hidden. The discussion will consider what Baltimore can learn from these projects and how they might shape future plans for the Jones Falls.
The panel is part of an exhibition exploring possible futures for Baltimore’s Jones Falls, the city’s founding river, which has been largely concealed beneath I-83 for more than five decades. Jones Falls 2076 presents 14 newly commissioned speculative works imagining the river in 2076 as an unburied, reconnected, repaired, and central ecological, social, and civic feature of Baltimore. The exhibition also surveys historical plans for controlling, burying, diverting, daylighting, and reclaiming the waterway, and includes participatory opportunities for visitors to share their own ideas.
