Globe Posters for the People
Globe Posters for the People is a near-centennial retrospective of Globe Press, a Baltimore printing company that made vivid, affordable promotional materials for artists, performers, political campaigns, and ideas that challenged mainstream media. The exhibition explores Globe’s role in bringing postwar popular culture to a broad public through high-contrast colors, distinctive typography, and accessible showcard printing.
The exhibition highlights Globe’s use of DayGlo, a fluorescent ink developed during World War II, in its silkscreen and letterpress work. More than 15,000 items in the company’s archive inform the presentation, which follows Globe from its modest beginnings to its present-day role as a teaching tool, working press, and archival resource at MICA. Featured subjects include local and touring acts such as James Brown, Salt-N-Pepa, and John Waters, as well as rodeos, circuses, and political campaigns.
